Mr Cheap’s New York Travel Guide

July 16th, 2010

New York City is known for being one of the most expensive cities in the world, if not the most expensive. With it’s fame for designer label anything and everything, the world’s wealthy and the infamous financial hub of Wall Street, people automatically expect to pay big bucks when they visit the Big Apple. But there is a way to enjoy all the city has to offer without breaking the bank.

1. Purchase Mr Cheap’s New York for $9.95 from Amazon. You might even get a second hand copy for less than 4 bucks. Seriously, this little gem could save you hundreds of dollars on your entire trip to New York. From your accommodation to attractions and a whole lot of shopping in between, Mr Cheap’s is a thorough guide to all those hidden bargains in and around the City.

2. Purchase the New York City Pass if you intend to stay longer than 3 days and want to see as much of the sites as you can. The pass will give you free entrance in to many places and discounts on others as well as discounts and various restaurants. You can save hundreds of dollars on your food, sightseeing and travel in and around New York.

3. Eat Pizza for dinner at least one night during your stay rather than going out to dinner. You can get a very good slice for under $3 in many of the Dehlis and side bars around town. Avoid the “Best Pizza in New York” places. They are more expensive and in my experience not the best. The best bang for your buck is just south of Time Square in the Dehlis. Once slice is quite enough for a meal and the cheese will melt in your mouth.

4. Shop first at the sample sales and around the garment district before heading off to the big department stores and 5th Avenue. Sample sales can be found by heading on over to the 34th street corridor between 5th and 3rd Avenue. You’ll find people handing out leaflets of the latest deals. There are also many designer basement stores like Strawberry and Cinderella off 8th Avenue that offer great bargains.

5. Spend a day in Central Park and don’t spend any money, other than your picnic lunch and dinner. Walk around the park, stop to picnic and people watch, walk some more and picnic and people watch some more. It’s very entertaining and cheap. You could quite possibly learn more about New York and New Yorkers this day than any other day of your travels.

Tips and warnings: Before you decide to do anything or go anywhere – refer to Mr Cheap’s to see if you can get it cheaper before venturing off on your travels.
