Carving fresh tracks at Snowbird (courtesy, Snowbird Resort)
So what makes these two connected resorts, perched at the top of a sleepy Utah canyon, the best skiing destination in North America?
The snow. Sitting on the bull’s-eye of the Wasatch Range’s freakishly powerful storm track, Alta/Snowbird consistently offers up more of the deep, light, and dry than any resort on the continent. This is where Ski Utah gets its 500-inch snowfall number—in a weather-dependent sport, AltaBird is the closest you can get to a sure thing. But deep snow ain’t fun if you don’t have the terrain to go with it. You’ll find steep and direct skiing off nearly every lift, with six high-speed quads and Snowbird’s famous tram to get you there. Learn the ins and outs of the many traverses and hikes (try Alta’s Devil’s Castle and the ‘Bird’s Thunder Bowl) and you’ll ski soft snow on new lines for weeks. The resorts’ vibes differ—laid-back Alta is dotted with old-school wooden lodges, while Snowbird is shiny and loud, concrete and glass. But what both places share, other than a dearth of nightlife, is a lack of pretense. Everyone is here for powder. And they get it. Last winter was so stormy, the Wasatch Powderbird Guides’ heli-ski operation barely got off the ground before February. A whopping 88 inches fell in April alone. At the time, I happened to be there doing some “reporting.” Here’s what I found out: If it’s dumping all winter, book a spring trip. The locals had long since packed it in, and our crew skied untracked powder for two solid days.

It takes some thought and creativity, but it’s possible to save money at a five star resort without crimping your travel lifestyle. Follow the frugal 8 tips below to save money during a luxury vacation:
Step1
Book the least expensive room. Like the real estate mantra of buying the least expensive house on the block, reserve the least expensive room at a five star resort. If you’re staying at a beach front resort with gorgeous pools and grounds, a fantastic gym & spa, and endless activity options, you probably won’t spend a lot of awake-time in your room. Use the money you save on a garden or partial ocean view room, rather than a deluxe ocean front room, to offset a spa treatment or pool side drinks.
Step2
Do your research for new promotions since you booked your trip. Check out travel sites to see whether your hotel has added any specials that you can take advantage of during your travel dates. Discounts may include room upgrades, promotional pricing, or a fourth-night free stay at a hotel. Every penny counts!

Whether you need accommodation at home or abroad, whether you want it for a night or for several weeks, whether it’s for one person or for a group, you will need to make a reservation. The alternative of leaving it until you arrive to worry about accommodation is not worth the stress of possibly finding yourself with nowhere to stay in an unknown city. If accommodation is at a premium for some reason, you may have to accept something that is more expensive than you planned, or below the standard you wanted. By booking ahead, especially with online hotel bookings, you can ensure that your accommodation is waiting for you at a price you have had time to consider and can afford.

With the high number of accidents, injuries and deaths at ski resorts throughout the world every year, it does seem that something has to be done. The number of skiing accidents has noticeably increased in Switzerland alone, with accidents in the tens of thousands last year, many of which were fatal or caused serious injuries. The number of helicopter rescues also increased - to the tune of hundreds in just one month.
So, the Swiss have had enough and are putting speed cameras on the slopes. Ski personnel will catch the speeders with hand-held radar gadgets. Those who are caught are given a warning first, and then could face a fine or confiscation of their ski pass. The cameras are in operation at Andermatt and will also be in operation at other major resorts like Davos, St. Moritz and Zermatt. Some may applaud Switzerland for taking a stand - but will this new trend catch on in ski resorts throughout the world?
In a perfect world, we’d all be at liberty to hurl ourselves down the slopes and not have to worry about anyone else. We’d never get hurt or killed or injure another innocent person. It is because we don’t have this ability that anyone who sets off on a ski trip without taking out travel insurance and winter sports coverage should have their head tested. If you’re not aware of the potential astronomical medical expenses associated with helicopter rescues, serious injuries and broken limbs (especially in North America) then it’s time for a wake up call!
